Does anyone know of an animal shelter in Westchester/Putnam area that is allowing volunteers? I just moved to Bedford and I am considering getting a dog. I’ve never had a dog before so I thought I would start volunteering at a shelter to see how it is to take care of a dog and to meet new people in neighborhood. However because of COVID it doesn’t look like many places are allowing volunteers. Anyone know of a place that is?
Yes, this situation is tough. The shelters that allow existing volunteers are unlikely to take on new ones in this situation, and even if they do, they probably prefer to 'space them out' to keep everyone safe, so not sure if volunteering would help you to meet many people. But you could consider fostering a dog to see how it is to have a dog at home. Many shelters also do 'foster to adopt', if you decide the dog is a good fit. The two shelters I know of are Paws Crossed and SPCA of Westchester but there must be others.
