I grew up in Pelham Manor and graduated in the early 80's. Yeah even back then they stop on the highway, hit a house and go. Also Korvettes, then Caldors and now ??? that parking lot was a hot spot for car thieves. See that has not changed. Now the schools were great: I'm a CPA with 2 masters. The 17 miles drive to NYC or the 28 minute train ride is great. Drive to all, now your neighbors, etc.
By the way I used to laugh when I read the papers. Used to read Joe Blow from Bridgeport or Sam Sleaze from Stamford was arrested at all the Metro North stations trying to steal cars. They would take a train in and go back to sewer land Bridgeport.
I would trade it in any day for this suburban nightmare north of the great sewer of New Haven. And you have real food down there not this garbage up here.
Pelham is definitely safe. Crime stats are reported all over the web. It is so well policed that the general practice is to call the local police when you go on vacation. They keep an eye on your house for you, and do call you if anything looks different. It is such a small town that I got phone calls one summer afternoon when my housekeeper showed up at a different time.
Check out the Pelham Heights neighborhood, next to the train, if you want a good commuting neighborhood, friendly, with block parties, that is walkable. It's also a breeze to get to major airports or to anyplace else in Westchester from Pelham. Schools are blue ribbon.
There is no town pool in Pelham, just lots of soccer for the children. Town is kind of low key, particularly since a boulder fell on five stores a couple of years ago, and they are still being rebuilt and checked by engineers.
