The reasoning I heard is that the wrong trees were planted 30+ years ago and the roots were interfering with the sidewalks and power lines. Village didn’t want to invest in burying power lines so chose to cut the trees down instead as part of the sidewalk replacement project. Another example (in my opinion) of poor infrastructure planning. Visit neighboring rivertowns with mature trees on their Main streets that somehow managed to bury the lines.
