My husband just got a position in 168th st of upper manhattan. I may get an job offer in Tarrytown. We are considering moving to Weschester since it would be better commute for both of us. We have 2 kids, 4&6 years old. Our combined salary would be around 150K. We are current living in North Carlina and know very few about New York. We wish to buy a house in New York when we move. With our salary, what kind of house can we buy? The school district is most important for us since we may stay in New York for a long term. We probably can afford a house around 500K with 20% down initially at closing, but we are not sure anything beyond the house purchase, Such as tax, utilities, house insurance. We heard everything is much more expensive compare to North Carolina. But I think a monthly mortgage of 2.5~3K plus 1k for tax is the most we may spend on housing. We may tolerate 1~2 hours commute as long as it will work for us with schooling kids. What is the situation about afterschools, school bus? How much do they cost? When does the NY elementary school starts and ends each day? What are usual afterschool hours? The ideal place for us is a safe neighbourhood with good school and easy to commute for both of us, a 3 bedroom single family house would be great for us. Does this kind of house exist for our budget? Where it could be?
Thanks.

I would suggest looking in Hastings-on-Hudson and its neighboring towns along the river. Housing IS much more expensive here, and so is the property tax. Would you consider a condominium?

If your husband is working at Columbia-Presbyterian, he's going to have to drive, because public transporation isn't very convenient for a trip to upper Manhatttan - unless you live in Riverdale, which is just across Spuyten Duyvil, in the Bronx. You might think about getting an apartment in Riverdale, as well...

Some other towns for you might consider are Eastchester and Tuckahoe for their proximity to both 168th St. and Tarrytown. Their school systems are also very good.
