Dear All,

Any advice or information about the Irvington public school system? I'm specifically looking for information about the school culture, level of professionalism amongst the staff, and the leadership in general. More of a focus on the high school would be ideal since both of my kids are in high school. We're contemplating a move there from NYC after hearing some great things about the area...

Thanks!

My son will be starting kindergarten at Dows Lane in the Sept and I have only heard/ experienced wonderful things with the school thus far. The district encourages parent involvement and there is a small town feel here- everyone knowing what is going on in the schools. Having only recently moved here- I have never met so many pleasant, well-mannered high school aged kids. I really think that says a lot about the schools and parents. Irvington is considered the wealthiest of the river towns, but there isn't a hint of snobbery and won't see many 16 year old driving around in BMWs. There seems to be a great emphasis placed upon working within the community, volunteerism, the arts and of course academics. Irvington is a walking town, so many of the kids- from the little ones to high school walk to school. I don't know much about leadership in any of the schools- other than the elementary- where the principal of 20 something years just retired. Parents absolutely loved this man, as did the kids. There was a big ceremony/pary for him and everyone in community was invited. Irvington is a great village. So close to the city and truly beautiful. Best of luck.
