I have recently been hired by a company in White Plains and I will be moving out there Aug, 1st. I have been looking over apartments on craigslist and have find a few decent places.

I plan to rent building type(apt, condo, etc) doesn't really matter much, i am looking for something with 1 or two rooms in the $1500 price. What I haven't been able to find are prices for utilities.

Could someone give me estimates for utility costs(electricity, gas, water, sewer, garbage, internet/phone[no cable]) for White Plains and some cities connected to White Plains by metro north? I don't plan on bringing my car with me, so it will be walking/biking everywhere.

Thanks much!

White Plains isn't all that walkable. A car would be close to a necessity. Even if you can walk to most stuff in Whtie Plains the grocery store, Stop & Shop, is far from most areas of town.

$1,500 seems about right for an apartment. For electricity rates in the area: I can keep it to around $35 a month, but I think that is on the low end. Cable TV and Internet combined are about $90 a month.

Water/sewer costs are usually covered by the landlord. Sometimes you get your gas for free for your stove, but most of the times you have to pay that. I think the basic charge is about $10-15 per month.

Most buildings in White Plains also charge for a parking spot. I would guestimate that it would be around $100 for a spot in the garage. Street parking in White Plains is pretty rough, so a garage spot would probably be a good idea.

Thanks for the response, I am glad to hear that utilities were not as expensive as I thought they would be.

I spent a few days in white plains for the interview process and found the city to be pretty nice. The apartments seemed close to the office building and a whole foods did not seem too far away, I should be able to bike there I think.

Default biking for groceries

Parking spots go for 100-150 a month. Some buildings include the spot(this is a great deal). I agree with the above #s. I use a cell phone, cable & TV, electricity (you don't pay much). In some buildings you have to pay for heat...which can be variable depending on what climate you like to live in the winter. Additionally, electricity is higher in some places with window AC units.

I'm a walker...it's a bit hard to walk/bike everywhere...even if you live in White Plains. Are you coming from Cali? It rains & snows here in NY a LOT in the winter & spring. I can't imagine biking for groceries in Feb in a coat with a rain jacket over it. Maybe buses.

Good luck.

I am coming from Nebraska, so I am used to the rain and snow. Are there any cities along the metro north line, through White Plains, that is more walker friendly?

Edit: Here in Nebraska the utility companies charge you a security deposit when they activate your service, any idea how much these are?

If you want walker friendly move to NYC.

As to paying for heat. Usually thats only the very new apartment buildings that have electric heat. Most of the older buildings have gas or water radiators, and you don't have to pay anything for the heat coming from those.
