We are planning a look see visit to the westchester area. First we wiil stay in NYC and do the tourist thing with our kids. Then we planned on going to Westchester, finding a nice hotel, and then driving around to many of the communities that interest us.
After loads of searches on trip advisor and such, I can't seem to find any hotels in southern westchester that have decent reviews. If we want to concentrate about 4 days to exploring Westchester, are there any good hotels. Or, should we just travel to and from the city each day? Any ideas would be great!

If I were doing this trip, I'd stay in Westchester. Here's a link to some of the B&Bs in the area

http://www.innsmart.com/newyork/east...stchester.html

Several are somewhat familiar to me, although I never stayed in any of these myself.

Going up and back from the City with children may present some challenges. If you are the County, you can rent a car and be on hand for any showings. Also staying in Westchester will give you a better idea of what it would mean to live in the County.

JMo, though. Good luck!

If you can affored it stay in the city area buy in Washington Heights, Astoria, Park Slope. Most the other outskirts are being slammed with 3rd world garbage, blond brick "Fedders Special" work Barricks, no place to park, overcrowded schools where 40% of kids under 5 only speak spanish and have 1 good for nothing parent.

Manhatten is systemically blocking this and getting rid of its minority population and shoving it north and east. The Mayor and his appointed politicians slap down anyone who raises their voice about it, you get usually get branded the old "racist" or a confrontational whacko!

Only the builders have rights because Mayor Bloomberg has thrown building and zoning laws straight down the toilet has granted them 100% power!
And now every morning illegal workers (usually still drunk from the night before) line up on Queens street corners, littering and ogling woman and teens going to school as they walk by.
Anyone with the courage to speak the truth will be branded a racist, thank you Mayor Bloomberg end of discussion.

-Joe

Default Tarrytown?

Would Tarrytown be a good base? They seem to have nicer options or hotels.
Or, is that a bit too far up?

what towns are you looking in? Tarrytown is not up, so much as it is west, and the traffic at rush hour going over the tappan zee bridge can be inconvenient. If you are looking at western towns (Ardsley, Hastings, Dobbs Ferry) you will be located fine. Otherwise, there is Arrowood in Rye Brook and Rye Town Hilton in Rye/Port Chester. Their location is ok for visiting most lower westchester towns and they are in nice safe areas. New Rochelle has a large hotel (don't know which chain it is), that is farther south, but the area is not as bucolic as the other two. As for staying in the city and coming up each day, that's fine, as long as you are visiting towns that have MetroNorth stations. Or are you planning on driving back and forth? Be warned - Parking in the city for 4 days/nights will set you back a few hundred bucks at least.
