Dave the H, (Dave, who lives in the Mortgage Hill nabe)
So how do you like living in Peekskill, now 2+ years later? I would be curious to get your assessment, from your experience.
My partner and I are thinking of relocating from Brooklyn, NY, and Peekskill is one of the towns we are contemplating. I will be commuting to work in downtown Manhattan. My son is grown, so schools are not an issue. I am an avid gardener, so am looking for something with a bit of land. Is this even a possibility in Peekskill? We will probably try to make a few trips up there to scout around in the next few months. This is an investigative query at this point.
Thanks

Not Dave, but my sig. other and I relocated to Peekskill from Montclair, NJ about 7 months ago and for the most part we love it. While the downtown area could still improve and has a lot fewer restaurants than Montclair (and obviously Brooklyn), those that are there are nice and you usually can get in without a reservation (good for a non-planner like me). We are walking distance to downtown, including the coffee house and the Paramount theatre, but we can also walk two blocks and get to the park to go hiking. We also have the biggest yard we've ever had (beginning gardners and dog parents) for a significantly lower house/tax payment. The commute is longer, but getting on in Peekskill I always get a seat on the train and it's a lovely veiw the majority of the way. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any specific questions. Good luck with your search - that can sometimes be the hardest (although hopefully fun too) part. ~ A

Thanks so much for your information, njgirl. It is most helpful.
We were up there this weekend, didn't look at houses, but drove around some streets on our way up to Putanm county.
I'm a BIG gardener, and this move is predicated on more land to cultivate, how big a property do you have? Can one get up to half an acre or more within the environs of Peekskill? I'll be asking realtors this of course, but am curious if you know. This is a big move, having lived in Brooklyn close to 30 years.

If I remember correctly, we have just under a 1/4 acre. There are bigger lots available in certain areas (i know further up the hill from us, a lot of the houses are on about a 1/3 of an acre), but I'm not sure if there's much at 1/2 acre or more. Peekskill, at least the part we live in, is for the most part is a bit more like a "city" than some of the surrounding towns. I can think of one property on the market right now that has over an acre, but it's on a pretty busy main road. Also, if they are available, they are likley to be further out from the center of town. However, I am by no means an expert on this topic, so checking with a realtor is definitely you're best bet.

Drug deals going on day and night?
Someone posted earlier that "There ARE drugs deals going on at all hours of the day and night" in Peekskill. I would consider myself very knowledgeable on street life and drug deals. Having participated many times as a buyer myself in my younger days, I can tell who's dealing and who isn't. I have never seen a single drug dealer working the streets of Peekskill in the year I've lived here.
But hey, don't take my word for it, I haven't bought drugs in 10 years. Ask the experts. Go to WeBeHigh.com - Worldwide Marijuana Travel Guide With Marijuana Prices, Spots & Legalization Status. They list about 1,000 cities across the country where you can buy pot. The funny thing is that Peekskill, the town where you have "drug deals going on day and night" is not listed, but the nearby towns that are more family friendly and have better schools of Yorktown Heights and Mahopac are.
On the city data website it also lists a crime index. The national average crime index is 320, Peekskill is 118. How much safer can you get?
Peekskill really is a great place to live, but too many people have a negative association with it because they aren't looking in the right places or they listen to the wrong people. Give it a day and experience it for yourself. See what you think.
And, if you want to buy drugs, try Yorktown Heights.

Hey, Thats a great question, but here is a response coming from a yonger generation. I am 21 and grew up in Peekskill, my whole life. My grandfather and great grandfather were both the mayors os this town. Patrick Hayes. Peekskill is a great place but don't think you can't walk down the wrong street. Peekskill is a great place but there are areas that you really have no business with unless family live there or you are looking for a certain drug such as weed or cocaine. There are a few areas that you really shouldnt go to unless you know what you are doing. Those places are Lincoln terrace and Park st. growing up i have seen a lot of people get hurt and in some cases get killed here. This area has a very large weed and cocaine problem ask my why i know is because a lot of people I know were the dealers and I was once a former client. Trust me take it from something who really grew up there and who doesnt just go but statistics which are very far off to begin with. Another area not to go down is over by Boehman Towers, this is a housing project that has somewhat cleaned up over the years but the drug issue is still rising. Driving through there is ok but I would not live there. I dont walk around there at night. I did that a few times and everytime I have had major problems. All in all Peekskill is a nice place and there are pockets of good areas but do not be ignorant to think that this city is all safe because ill tell you right now it is not. Remember the people you are getting info from on this site seem to be older so they havent lived through the recent times of this city. A city is always changing, remember that. And remember talk to locals that are of a younger generation. Not the older well off people who dont "really" know what goes on. I hope this helped you.
