Does this city have a bad rep. in Westchester County? Is it a "rough" city or does it have it's good and parts? What about White Plains and New Rochelle too?
All three cities have desirable and safe residential neighborhoods. Generally - In Mount Vernon, north of the Cross County Parkway; in New Rochelle, north of Eastchester Road and Beechmont Avenue; in White Plains, south of Bryant Avenue. White Plains also has many rental, coop and condo options in and near the downtown area.
Mount Vernon is the roughest of the three. The truly bad areas of White Plains and New Rochelle are limited to relatively small geographic areas.
I think ruby summarized it correctly. Although there are some decent parts of Mount Vernon, overall it is not known as a desirable area.
On the other hand, New Rochelle has some very nice and affluent parts, although many of the more affluent residents opt for private schools.
White Plains is the most interesting story, as the city is undergoing a bit of a renaissance with recent additions of a lot of luxury units in the city itself. Once you leave the urban portion of White Plains, towards the more suburbarn parts of the city, it's basically nice middle class (and upper middle class) neighborhoods. For an urban setting, the schools do not have a horrible reputation, but they obviously don't score as well as the more suburbanish districts.
Thanks for the open and honest posts. They are pretty much what I've heard and thought about the three cities.
