Best commute to NYC (looking to move and don't know where!) (Yonkers: apartments, rental) - Westchester County - New York - City-Data Forum

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are planning on moving to Westchester at the end of the year. He goes to SUNY Purchase and I'll be graduating nursing school, so I'd like to work in the city. Originally, my brother recommended Astoria but it would have been too inconvenient for my boyfriend to commute to school.

So... my main goal is to find a place in a safe area. Preferably, I want a place with a backyard since we're bringing our other member of the family (an Aussie named Riley). I don't need to be within walking distance of a train station, but it would be nice. Either way, I'm really just looking for the shortest commute possible.

As far as my boyfriend's commute goes, the farther south we go, the more abundant the highways so that's not an issue for him.

My ideas are Yonkers and Tarrytown, but I know nothing of these areas and don't know where to start. I'm not worried about price range right now since our move is almost a year away, but I really just want to narrow down good, safe areas. Once we move, we plan on staying there for a few years. So I want to be happy! lol.

Even early on, it is important to know budget.
Also, are you planning on staying in the same home, long term, which may raise the issue of school quality.

If commuting is the biggest issue, then the Metro North website will tell you all you need to know about train frequency and times.

We're looking for at least a 2 BR, and we can afford up to $2500/mth. My concern is safety. We're not considering school quality, we just want a good quality of life in a safe area. We live in Albany now and we're boxed in by violence. The SUNY kid that was from LI? Yea, he was shot across the street from us, in what is supposed to be a nice area. Around the corner, a friend was robbed. Two blocks down, another kid was stabbed.

I want to be able to live without worrying about leaving my apartment, regardless of the time of day. Since I'm not familiar with Westchester, I'd just like some recommendations on areas to look into.

Try Pelham. There are houses in your price range, in really safe neighborhoods.

In the current market in your price range you can find some good options for apartments, so don't rule them out. In White Plains, my brother and sister-in-law found a baragain for a 2br for $1300 and that was just in January 2009. Right on North Broadway!! There is also a shuttle van that goes from SUNY Purchase into White Plains every 40 mins or so all day/7days a week. So definately look at White Plains. I'd also suggest to look in Hardsdale, Pelham, Mamaroneck, North White Plains, New Rochelle (although neigborhoods can be sketchy in so many places). On the other side of Westchester, maybe a 25 minute drive is Dobbs Ferry, an artsy little town right off the Hudson River, you can get a good rental there as well.
