We are considering making an offer to a builder on new construction. He has outlined the allowances he would include for materials in kitchen, bathrooms, etc.

I just have no idea if these allowances are sufficient (not necessarily looking for luxury level, but would like high end). Specifically, what would be good allowances for kitchen cabinets and kitchen countertops? What would be reasonable allowances for bathroom materials? (from powderroom to hall bath, to master bath)

Any guidance would be helpful.

The best thing to do is to visit a couple of showrooms and get a quote per linear foot of the cabinet and price per square foot of the countertops that you want. That way, you could estimate what the new kitchen would cost by measuring the layout to determine how many linear feet of cabinets you would need and how many square feet of countertop would be required. Many places would likely do this for you, especially if you need a supplier/installer to bid on the job if the builder is not going to install the materials themselves.

Be sure to select hardware, too, as it can add significantly to the bottom line if you want higher end pulls/knobs.
