Hello - Near what intersection is downtown Peekskill? I keep reading comments about how nice the downtown area is but I was unable to find it while driving through the area.

I'm not sure I'd use the word "nice" to describe the area. The downtown is pretty funky, gritty, and urban, which is a good part of it's charm. But the intersection of Brown street and South Division street is the center of the Artist District. Within 3 blocks you've got the Paramount Center for the Arts, the Peekskill Coffee House, Bean Runner Cafe, Treat Station, Division Street Grill, 12 Grapes Music and Wine Bar, Bruised Apple bookstore, the Coop, Side Effects, Ruebens Mexican, and about 6 or 7 galleries. Other galleries and the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art are spread out along main street. You should also check out the area around the train station and the Riverfront Green. There you have the Peekskill Brewery, JP Kelley's, and a gallery. In terms of residential areas, the area around Hudson street alongside Downing Park going up the hill is lovely, as is the Fort Hill Historic District (along Nelson, next to the Fort Hill Park).

DMA1250 gave you a pretty thorough description of the downtown area. I don't really care for Peekskill too much myself, but to each his own. I look at some of the businesses there, such as Treat Station or Ford Piano, and I just wonder how they survive. It seems to me from local news that there's a lot of drug activity in Peekskill. I do like Riverfront Park, though. In the summer, they have a free concert series there, and one of the local car clubs hosts an annual car show there as well. If you've ever seen the movie Unfaithful (Diane Lane, Richard Gere), the lower end of Hudson Street with Riverfront Park in the background was used at the end of the movie when the couple is sitting in their SUV together talking about leaving the country.
If you come up for a visit, take a look at the new townhouses just up the hill from the train station, and next door to the Catholic convent. Driving up from NYC, you'll need to get to Route 9/9A North. Around Croton-on-Hudson, the two roads split and you'll want to stay on Route 9 (9A becomes a local road). Get off at Hudson St, which is the next exit after Louisa Street. If you make a left at the end of the ramp, you'll go to Riverfront Park. Making a right at the end of the ramp then a left at the traffic light onto Washington St, you can either go straight when you hit the next light (near a Sunoco station) or make a right turn to get to the downtown area.

It had wealth and was a very beautiful city...great houses, once the industry moved out and the Shopping Malls came in the area, Peekskill deterioted...
