we wanted to get info on where to find hypoallergenic dogs in westchester county.
There is no such thing as a 'hypoallergenic dog.' Allergies are caused by proteins that are recognized as 'foreign' but since ALL dogs have DOG proteins and not human proteins, there is NO such things as a hypoallergenic dog. Some breeds have less dander (which contains the shed protein) than others but ALL dogs will have some people who are allergic to them.
Lori, Viralmd is correct, the concept that there is a true "hypoallergenic" dog is false. However, we do have allergies in our family and have noticed that we react less strongly to some breeds than to others. We have a schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle mix) and she has never triggered any allergic reaction in us. Other dogs that I have heard of as being less likely to trigger allergies (in addition to schnauzers, poodles & schnoodles) are Wheaten terriers and Portuguese water dogs. But you should remember that you also have to consider other characteristics of any breed you consider--the water dogs need a LOT of exercise, for example.
I would strongly suggest looking for rescue groups that have dogs in these breeds to see if they have any that need good homes. You could try: Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder
Good luck!
You might have good luck with breeds that don't shed. The danders tend to come off with the fur and cause allergies to flare up. I'm mildly allergic to dogs but it seems to be only to dogs that shed. We have a Shih Tzu and I have no problem. I previously had a Lhasa Apso with no problems either. The trade off is that you need to get your dog groomed frequently.
I went to the lady's house. She had four dogs. All were well groomed and living in a nice suburb of Los Angeles. She's no more a puppy mill than I am a pink gorilla. You should really try to know something before making accusations. Here is a tripple-smack

Ok, then she's a backyard breeder. Just as bad. And you only SAW four dogs. Who knows how many others are at another site or somewhere you don't know about. And NO reputable breeder needs to advertise or would ever consider shipping a dog.
I've been involved in dog training and rescue too long to fall for that one. There's nothing these people won't do to make a buck on the backs of innocent animals. I stand by what I said.
A lot of people don't realize that people who place ads in the paper and call themselves "breeders" are actually just middlemen for puppy mills. The puppy mill operators have learned that buyers like to think they are adopting dogs from a "home environment," so they work with these people to provide them with dogs to sell. I don't know exactly how the economics work but I assume each party gets a cut of the selling price. I'm not saying everyone who sells a dog from their home and calls themselves a "breeder" is lying, but I wouldn't take the risk. There are so many dogs in reputable shelters who need homes, and if you are set on getting a particular breed, you can go through rescue organizations for most breeds.
I read a story in People magazine a while back about one man who is trying to fight puppy mills run by the Amish. I had no idea that the Amish were involved in this. It really makes me think twice now before I buy those Amish products in the stores.

Have you ever heard of a responsible breeder? One who has few dogs, goes to dog shows and regularly wins championships? Her stud is a 16 time national and international champion, and is a Master Champion in ARBA. Her female is also a Master champion. I saw the ribbons and the certificates.
Check out her web site, then come back here and make more complaints if you can figure out what to complian about.
