I have no first hand experience with this situation, but the reason people share wells is because they cannot drill a well for each property. In most cases the distance between the properties and their septics raises a concern for contamination and the health department does not allow individual digging under such conditions.
Where I live, a new water district was created and all properties were connected to town water because of such conditions.
