I've heard tons of negative things about the south side of Mount Vernon - crime rates, poor schools, etc. but I was hoping someone might have something good (or I'll take OK) to say about the area to try to lift my spirits up a bit.
You see, my hubby and I fell in love with a large, tudor house on a quiet, leafy block on the South Side. We liked it because it's close to the Bronx (we have family in the Bronx) and the 5 subway train, and the block seemed very working class residential (a good thing for us!)
We felt it was "the one" as soon as we walked in....but now as we're getting near the closing date, I'm having extreme anxiety, --- mainly I'm worried about getting burglarized or robbed while walking home from the train station.
Does anyone who live in the "good" side of the South Side have any thoughts/insights on this? I'd really like to pick your brain on this.
BTW - I'm originally from the Flatbush section of Brooklyn so I'm used to a bit of edge, but I've never, EVER worried about getting robbed in my old neighborhood (despite its rep and the statistics).
While the South Side is pretty gritty, unless you are on one of those apartments immediately on 3rd Street or between 3rd Street and the Metro North tracks you'll probably be OK.
One area of the South Side called Langdon Terrace is actually pretty nice......
Also, there are some good schools in the Mount Vernon SD at the elementary level. You might be able to keep your kids there through HS as well. The area between E. Sandford Blvd (south) and E. 3rd St (north); S. Columbus Ave (east) and S. Fulton Ave (west) has nice homes and is fairly quiet. The farther you are away from from the main drags, the better you'll be. I think it's called Vernon Heights.
If your from Flatbush you should have no problem what so ever, you'll find alot of similarities (I have family in Flatbush, I know :-) ) . If you guys feel it in your gut then go for it!
are you looking by the Dyre ave 5? or the station on 241st?
Mount vernon has the highest crime rate out of the entire westchester county. You will find dome nice places to call home. But,mount vernon in a whole is no place to raise a family. These kids are growing up faster and wilder then usual. The schools are failing the kids left and right. Most of the parents don't know how to parent leaving our streets unsafe to be on. I am searching right now to leave mount vernon. The ghetto of all ghettos.
