Hello everyone, I have been coming here to read for a few days and found it all very informative. I have a few questions:

My husband and I live in London but we have both spent half our lives in manhattan (west village and tribeca)

we are thinking of moving back to new york, but we definitely dont want to be in manhattan anymore (not enough space, doormen knowing your business, neighbours that complaint about everything, no pet policies are becoming a turn off for us.

the thing is: we have two pets, but no children. I worry we will be excluded from the community since we are a couple with no kids. (that may change in 2 years or so).

so, for a couple in their 40s, with no kids (so for now school district is of no importance), and with a budget (we are renting at first to test the waters!) of 15,000 per month, which area do you think would suit us best?

for us a bigger home is important, but a nice downtown area (we want a genuine feel of a downtown area not just target and home depot shops), proximity to good restaurants and movie theaters are a must.

any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated it. again, the only places we re considering are larchmont, rye, rye brook and mamaroneck.

thanks so much!

Based upon what you're looking for in terms of a downtown area, I would recommend focusing your search on Larchmont and the City of Rye. Rye Neck, Rye Brook, and parts of Mamaroneck do not have the same type of downtown commercial districts that are in as easy walking proximity. Larchmont, for example, is one of a few places in Westchester that eschews chain stores, has a small theatre, nice parks, etc.

As for not having children, you are going to have to join clubs and generally be open to meeting people since many do tend to have associations that are more school-based. It's not impossible, however, but I would recommend taking the lead in the situation to do as much as possible to gain exposure in various organizations, sports, and volunteer opportunities in the community (and neighboring areas).

Thanks BMWGUYDC, thats very helpful. I think larchmont and rye are the way to go for us. planning a trip for a few days to see it in the flesh.

Yes, not having children can leave us out in the cold, I have found lots of associations, clubs in those towns that seem to fit well with childless adults.

thanks!

You're welcome. There is much to like along the Sound Shore, and there are activities for people without children. I think that you will like it. After your trip, post back if you have any questions, since one of us on the Westchester forum will be happy to give an answer or perspective. Enjoy your visit!

The city of Rye has a great downtown and I LOVE the beach (as you can tell) but the schools are changing. As of right now the negotiations between the Board of Ed and the RTA (teachers union) in Rye have totally disintegrated. Over two years without a contract is telling. It really is only a matter of time before this situation hits the point where it will begin to affect the overall quality of life in Rye, if it hasn't already. Change is just the way it is...I guess.
