Hi all,
We're a couple in our early 30's, living in Brooklyn, now considering a move to Westchester or Putnam... An artist and a writer with day jobs in NYC, but possibilities of freelancing. Had been set on the Cold Spring/Garrison area, due to artsy vibe and nice downtown -- but now considering Purdys (with Somers schools). From what I can tell, commute times for Somers & Garrison are comparable... And the school districts both seem to be good (right?). Any insights into "real life" in either of these places would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Somers is a great place to live and raise family. It is very conveniently located in regards to highways and MetroNorth. There is no main street such as in Cold Spring, and not too much going on right in town. However, Yorktown, Katonah, Cold Spring, even Danbury and Mount Kisco are all within easy drive for more shopping/entertainment options. Property taxes are lower in Somers comparing to surrounding areas as IBM and PepsiCo are located right here and support the taxpayers. For more information you might want to check out Somers Town website: Town of Somers, New York, Cradle of the American Circus--Home Page.
Hope this helps,
Natasha
Lots of people in Cold Spring are from Brooklyn. Not much going on in Garrison, although you are very close to Cold Spring. Keep in mind that in Cold Spring you are fairly isolated--most of your shopping, beyond basics, will take you to Beacon or further afield.
The advantage of a Somers is that it's easy to get to Katonah, Mt. Kisco, and Yorktown Heights, which between them, have pretty much have anything you could possibly need, in terms of shopping and services.
A couple of other notes: 1) Somers isn't really close to Cold Spring--a good 45 minute drive; 2) All the school districts you are looking at are good or better.
