FredKim, you may want to check out Wykagl. The Wykagl area of New Rochelle is absolutely gorgeous, it would be a wonderful place to raise a family. We looked very closely at Wykagl before eventually deciding on Hartsdale.

You'd be better off starting a new thread instead of reviving one that's several months old. More info on your criteria would be usefull too.

Default thanks

New Yawker,

Thanks a lot my wife and I appreciated the info it helped us out a lot. I was wondering what made you choose Hartsdale over Wykag? Also what is the average home price in those areas? We are looking for a three bedroom two bath home.

FredKim,

We looked pretty closely at all of lower Westchester for the last year and a half as we knew we were going to move at some point. Our biggest must-haves were (1) proximity to Metro North and commute time to NYC, (2) decent lot size and "bang for the buck" on house size, (3) avoiding oppressive taxes (mostly school-driven), since we will not be using the public schools, and (4) a $675K absolute limit as to what we could afford.

With those criteria in mind, we eventually narrowed our search to White Plains, which has some gorgeous neighborhoods and low taxes, northern Yonkers (Beech Hill), which had low taxes but relatively high prices, northern New Rochelle (including Wykagl), which has somewhat higher taxes and more reasonable prices, and Hartsdale, which has lower taxes (than New Rochelle but higher than WP), very good prices, and convenient access to Metro North. We picked Hartsdale because we were able to find a great value there that most suited our criteria (2700 square feet, 4 br 3 baths on a 1/2 acre for about $600K). We love the downtown, access to Metro North with a decent parking situation, and proximity to NYC, and the schools don't matter to us. We're very happy with how it worked out, and I learned a lot about Westchester in the process. This board was a great help as well, very instructive.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you want more info.
