Is this a safe community? How are the schools there? Does it have a Downtown? Is it diverse in terms of economic status?

The tiny bit of residential area that it does encompass, it lower class. The school district is among the worst in Westchester.

The "downtown" is largely a strip of lowball businesses, light industry and a Sam's Club. It would be very low on most people's list of communities. What's behind your question? Are you planning on moving there?

It's not what I would call dangerous, but very gritty looking and mostly commercial/industrial with a school district with a poor reputation. Where are you looking in Elmsford? There is a nice townhome development there I believe.

It's a pretty gritty small town that is increasingly mostly Hispanic immigrants of lower income. There's a condo community in the northeastern end of town that is nice but is Pocantico Hills schools (top notch!) instead of Elmsford, I almost moved there a long time ago (late 90s).

When people say gritty, do they mean gritty as in "blue collar" or gritty in terms of the look of the community in terms of upkeep?

Also, I looked at the school district info and relatively it is on the lower end of Westchester SD's, but it generally isn't that bad: Test Scores for Elmsford Union Free School District | GreatSchools

I'm just asking because you don't hear much about it on this forum.

Since it was brought up, where do kids in the Pocantico Hills SD go for HS?

I believe they get a choice of sleepy hollow, briarcliff manor and I forget the third school.

I'm not sure what gritty means either. But if you are considering the elmsford school system, explore all other options when possible.

I found out the third option is Pleasantville: Pocantico Hills Central School

A little of both, but for Elmsford I mostly mean "upkeep" (there's very little true "blue collar" in this area, especially since GM left the Tarrytown plant in the 1990s and Otis Elevator left Yonkers in the early 80s). Though Elmsford is more commercial and less residential than similar small towns in other parts of Westchester anyway.

As for schools, the truth is that for the most part the "worst" schools in Westchester County would at the very least be "middling" in most other places. Even my hometown of Mt. Vernon, often considered the "worst" school district, has some neighborhood elementary schools (particularly in the areas near Bronxville) that can compete with some "richer" districts and the middle and high school, while the numbers aren't "great" again would be what I'd call a "low middle" in many other places. Ditto for neighboring Yonkers.
