I need to plan for some gardening work in my yard for the spring. Can anyone suggest a good plant nursery that would have a large selection and affordable prices? The ones I have been to, in Mamaroneck and Scarsdale, seem to have very slim pickings and the staff are not very helpful or knowledgeable. They also seem to be way overpriced. Any ideas would be great! Thanks.
I would check Rosedale Nursery in Hawthorne for a good selection, and good quality, of plants. For smaller items, since it's not a huge nursery, I would also check Michael's Garden Gate in Mount Kisco.
White Flower Farm in Litchfield (CT) has many hard-to-find plants, and is the HQ for the mail-order business as well.

I agree with Rosedale. However, our experience with things from White Flower Farm hasn't been good. Pricey but the plants were really disappointing.

The Pound Ridge Nursery has an amazing selection of annuals, perennials (many exotic), shrubs, trees, etc. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. They'll also do whatever work you want. As for "affordable," it's in the eye of the beholder. They're expensive, but they're a high service, high end nursery and they charge accordingly. The time to buy is their Columbus Day Sale when everything is marked down 40%. Rosedale in Hawthorne is good too, but definitely not in the same league.
I'd also check Twombly Nursery in Monroe (CT) for a good selection of unique plants, since they generally have a selection of specimens and rare plants that are difficult to find at other nurseries.
Another option to consider, is if you're good with seeds, would be to obtain some heirloom seeds. We have done that with some annuals, and have been asked where to get them, since they're not commonly found.

I think Nabels nursery on the White Plains/Mamaroneck border is a wonderful nursery. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and their quality is excellent. I live in northern westchester and think it's definitely worth the drive for shrubs and trees. For basic perennial and annual flowers I shop at a bunch of small local nurseries. I find that the quality of the flowers vary sometimes from week to week. It all depends upon when the plants come in. You can get great buys on flowers from Home Depot if you get there before they have a chance to die from neglect. :-)
