My family of 4 is looking to move from Park Slope to Westchester. We are skiing, gardening, fleece-wearing, liberal-Democrats, trail-running, hiking-type people. We've been looking at houses along the river towns and Pocantico. Ideally, we'd love some place like Katonah or Pound Ridge but the commute is too far for my husband who works in midtown. Question: Pocantico seems lovely w/ all the open space and we love the school w/ it's partnership with Stone Barns, but would we fit in with the people in the village? It seems very hard to find out anything about Pocantico other than that it's very pretty. I know some areas of Westchester are quite conservative and staid-- can anyone tell us anything about the actual community there? oh, and I'm a stay-at-home mother, so I'd like to live someplace where there are other mothers at home. Thanks so much.

I can't think of a place in Westchester where there aren't SAHM's. We surely have more per capita than most areas. I don't think PH is very conservative but it isn't like the river towns either which are very much more as you described your family.

this doesn't answer your question, but.....

If that's your lifestyle go with Pound Ridge or Katonah anyway. Lots of people commute to the city. Here's why: On Weds my son and I put on our X-C skis, cut through the back of our lot and through the neighbors. Their sled team of huskies barked at us. From there it was 30 ft across the street to a local preserve and 4 miles of stunning up-and-down skiing in fresh snow. We didn't see or hear a soul. We were wearing fleece (what else?). PR, Bedford and Katonah are packed with SAHMs, you won't be lonely. And PR elem is terrific.

that sounds pretty perfect to me! I have heard great things about the schools there, too. Maybe it's time to make a trip there. In our fleece, of course! thanks

If you go on a weekend you'll get a better flavor than weekdays. While you're at it, stop in at the Scott's Corners Market, the local grocery. markets are always good for local flavor. I'm guessing you'll be thrilled, though those who prefer Walmart or mega Stop-and-Shops will be horrified. Either way, they're the only game in town. After that drop in at the Hiram Halle library. There are always things for kids, see how you like the vibe. You'll drive by the town park which usually has skating this time of year and is a throwback to another slower age. None of this is more than a couple minutes apart (zero lights, Pound ridge doesn't have any) and maybe 1 stop sign. But bring your checkbook, you'll want to put down a deposit on the spot.
