My husband just got a job in White Plains, NY and we will be moving around May 1, 2010.

1) I wanted to have an idea of what are the safe areas to live there?
2) Is cost of living high in White Plains, I am moving from North NJ?
3) What are the good communities to look for apartment rentals?
4) We have a car. Are there any surrounding areas which are great to live at and he can drive to work everyday?
5) This is my first time living in NY state, so I am a bit apprehensive.

Please suggest!!!

Thanks!!

you shouldn't be apprehensive, you are definitely making an improvement!

Safe areas in white plains, is on a street by street basis. Some streets are ghetto, some streets are filled with rich people.

You can read through a lot of the old posts here to get ideas of towns outside of white plains. For the best commute, I would recommend a town that has easy access to 287. Tarrytown comes to mind, since it is next to the tappan zee and will be closer to your friends/family back in northern. nj.

SDCity is right about White Plains. It varies by street.

For apartment rentals with an easy commute to White Plains, I would recommend White Plains, Harrison, parts of Greenburgh inc Tarrytown and areas with a White Plains PO, Scarsdale, Eastchester, and Rye Brook.
