My family and I are looking to move from NYC to Westchester and we're considering White Plains for it's close proximity to NYC, affordable housing and reasonable taxes.

We have 2 kids so schools are important. I've seen that WP test scores aren't as high as other districts in the county, but I realize test scores don't tell the whole story especially when compared to other Westchester schools (which I hear are some of the best in the US).

Anyone out there who can tell me about the WP schools?

Good teachers? Solid academics for motivated kids? Good programs?

What about safety at the middle and high school levels? Is WPMS and WPHS safe? I read on other postings here that similar schools in the area (i.e. New Rochelle HS) had a lot of problems with violence & crime. Needless to say, we don't want that environment for our kids.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If you do a search on CD you will find scores of postings about WP schools.

Just a brief comment: My kid attended primary school in WP and I have no complaints at all. He was safe and the academics were appropriate and provided the additional help he needed. All of his teachers (with the exception of one) were warm and caring. There is a lot of racial diversity in WP and this has an impact on the test scores. When a kid just arrives to US and speaks no English, they sort of bring the score down. You have to take these tests with a grain of salt anyway. Middle and HS are OK in terms of safety, nothing too out of the ordinary. I always mention that WP is a mall city so kids in MS are mall brats. The middle schools (one school, two campuses) are located in really old buildings with the Eastview being kind of scary so many kids prefer to go to the Highlands building. There is only one high school and is huge. It seems to be well equipped (even has a pool). I never heard HS kids to be involved in problems while I lived there but I moved a few years back so I don't have any recent news.
Hope this helps...don't forget to search the links.
