Anyone know of any oriental restaurants that will deliver in the Yorktown area? I tried calling Hunan Empire and they said "no"
It's not "oriental restaurants", it's either Chinese restaurant, Japanese restaurant, Vietnamese restaurant and etc.... The word oriental is offensive.

My understanding is that it is permissible to use the word oriental to refer to rugs and for everything else it is a derogatory term.
I work with mostly Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean people. After reading this thread I asked them - they unanimously agreed that it is not derogatory. Of course its a bit vague to say this when requesting restaurant suggestions, but according to them it is not offensive.
Random House's Guide to Sensitive Language states "Other words (e.g., Oriental, colored) are outdated or inaccurate." This Guide to Sensitive Language suggests the use of "Asian or more specific designation such as Pacific Islander, Chinese American, [or] Korean". Merriam-Webster describes the term as "sometimes offensive."
It's not offensive. Why would it be? It refers to Oriental vs Occidental, which is just an archaic way of saying Asian (Eastern) vs European (Western.)
It's a very Eurocentric way of saying "Asian,", and it's certainly not fashionable to use the term these days, but there's nothing offensive about it.

Good one. Actually, it's supposed to be preferred for inanimate objects. But for people, it is preferred to say "Asian", referring to cultural identity one embraces, not an object style one labels.
Of course, there's the official approach that academics and originators of the terminology had, and the real world. In the real world, any time you use the word "Oriental" people will try to frame you as a bigot.
