I'm looking for advice/information on where to open my chiropractic practice in Western North Carolina. Right now my wife and I are looking at Asheville and Winston-Salem/Greensboro areas.
Our practice is focused on family wellness care along with nutritional and detoxification counseling. We will have programs and workshops for people who want to change their health and live a healthy lifestyle. We support and promote living organic and natural and everything that we do in our office focuses on an inside-out principle, that is our bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves given the opportunity. So we are looking for a place that supports these principles of health, but also a place where help is needed the most.
We would like to open in an up-and-coming area of the city. Areas of new growth focused on younger families would be ideal. We've been through Asheville, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. We liked Asheville the most but would like input on areas of the city to look into. Personally we enjoy bigger cities that have good ratings in dining experiences, arts and theater, and starting a family.
Does anybody have recommendations with these cities in regards to opening a holistic, family oriented, chiropractic center and raising a family? If you are from one of these cities we would greatly appreciate up and coming areas so we can narrow our focus. Thank you!
Asheville is very much into organic and holistic anything so you should have a winner there. As for up and coming areas, Arden/Fletcher is the big growth area with affordable housing and young families although there are a lot of young families in West Asheville due to the lower cost of housing there. North Asheville around Grove Park and Beaver Lake is the expensive end of town (if you don't count Biltmore Forest which is its own enclave/entity). The health food stores are located in Arden (Earthfare), W. Asheville (Earthfare), downtown (Greenlife & FB Coop), N. Merrimon (Fresh Market). There are farmers markets all over the place with the N. Asheville one at UNC being my favorite.
As far as dining, you can't beat the choices in Asheville. We have everything from BBQ (Obama's first stop off the plane was 12 Bones) to French comfort food and lots of vegetarian. The arts and entertainment thing may be a problem here. There is the Flat Rock playhouse in Flat Rock and a couple other small venues but nothing big time. Orange Peel offers a good concert venue and UNC has a weekly series on the quad in the summer. Lots of festivals with Belle Chere this weekend and weekly events downtown at Pack Square. But if you're looking for something in the off-Broadway circuit it ain't here and museums are essentially nonexistent (I was spoiled by the Smithsonian in DC). For locals culture is going to church or a bluegrass festival and they constantly rail about the hedonistic festivals downtown so don't wander too far outside the city limits.
Can't help with the family thing--my youngest is 29 and lives in Raleigh (but hates it there). However there are tons of family oriented activities in the area especially if you like hiking, camping, fishing and anything else outdoors. BTW its usually about 10 degrees cooler up here in the summer than it is in Winston-Salem or Greensboro. Good luck with your choice
The only thing I'll ad to Cofga's excellent summary is while holistic care is a hot item here, if you shake the trees chiropractors offering that sort of philosophy will fall out. It seems like they are all doing at least a respectable business, but there are a ton of them.
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that Asheville has way more than enough chiropractors. I would strongly advise you to do a comparison of how many per population are in each area. I can't go anywhere in town without seeing several offices. If you wanted the mountains you might be better off in Boone.
I would like to relocate to Winston-Salem or a town nearby and to find a suitable property with nature setting away from the hustle and bustle of a city life to start a teaching institute and wellness center in Holistic therapies etc., please advise thank you .

There is a separate sub-forum for Winston-Salem and the Triad area. You would be better served to post your query there instead of Western NC. Best wishes to you.

We are 3 hrs. from Winston Salem. Look at Advance NC, Clemmons NC etc. suburbs of W/S.

Chiropractors here are like grocery stores.
