Looking for a resort or cabin in the mountains this winter for vacation. 4yo and 6yo to see snow. Mainly want to do some sledding and playing in the snow. Haven't completly thrown out the idea of skiing but went to colorado last year and think we got spoiled with the kids program there. Some of the reviews I read talk about how unsafe and crowded the ski mountains are. Would love a place that had sledding right there on the mountain and lots of area for the kids to just run around. We would be driving from florida. Any ideas of locations or places? Remember we have very little snow/ice driving experience, so places easier to get to are better.

The only places in NC where you are gaurenteed to see snow in the winter are at the ski resorts (because they can make it).

With that in mind, I would advise you to consider a condo rental at Beech Mountain. High elevations like that are your best bet for weather that MIGHT bring snow or at least give temps for the snow makers on the slopes.

Or you might like this place: Welcome to the Beech Alpen Inn

Now, another great place when you have kids is Scenic Wolf Resort near Asheville. I believe they make snow there too, or at least will transport you to a skiing area that does.

Family members of mine visited this place last winter and haven't stopped raving about it: Western North Carolina Vacation Resort - Mountain Cabin Rentals - Real Estate Scenic Wolf Mountain Resort

There is a special hill outside of Blowing Rock off Hwy 221 South where the signs point to the Blue Ridge Parkway that kids sled down. It is about three miles from BR. I took pics last year and if I could ever figure out how to post, I would. There are probably more, but that is the main one I know of. Lots of places to rent within a few miles of here. We use to rent our house and always sent families there. Kids love it and Yes, it is free.
