Hi all.

It's been mentioned on several threads that medical care in Hendersonville is better than in Brevard.

I looked up hospital scores on the Health Grades web site and the hospitals in both towns got similar scores, except the section where they asked patients to rate the hospitals - in that section, the hospital in Brevard scored much higher.

Also read that the hospital in Brevard recently became affiliated with Memorial Mission in Asheville.

Perhaps there are more services available in Hendersonville since it's larger? Can anyone shed any light on the difference?

Also in case of serious illness, I'm wondering what sort of treatments are better done in Asheville and how convenient it would be from Brevard.

(We currently live in Hiawassee, GA, so we're already in the mountains. Back in 2001, we were in Asheville and happened to drive to Brevard and ate dinner there. I don't remember the drive being too bad. We will probably drive over and check things out better in the next few weeks.)

Thanks for any information you can give.

Hi there - I can say without a doubt in my mind that the level of care is of great quality in both facilities. The only drawback to TRH vs. Pardee would be the amount of choices/specialties. It's true TRH recently affiliated with Mission Hospitals.

I'm in the medical field and would be OK with receiving services at either hospitals.

Thanks! That's sort of what I thought.

My biggest worry is future heart issues or cancer. Or possibly a heart attack. Recently, a friend's husband in Blairsville, GA had a sudden serious heart problem that required surgery and he needed a true expert doctor. He had to go to Gainesville, GA, which was a pain for his wife.

I may find myself in the same boat some day, but am still thinking it's a little less arduous to travel back and forth between Brevard and Asheville. You have to go over a serious mountain and super curvy roads to get to Gainesville from here.

Pardee Hospital has a Comprehensive Cancer Program. Both Pardee and TRH have Asheville Cardiology Associates physicians on staff at both hospitals. ACA is one of the best (if not the best) cardiology practice in WNC, imho.

That is REALLY good news!

THANKS!

We've had a real wake-up call with what our friend went through. We are in our early fifties and in a position to move because we're only renting. But we know people in their sixties, seventies, and even eighties who moved here and built houses that would be difficult to sell now. I can't believe they didn't check out the medical situation beforehand.

Besides the so-so hospitals here, a lot of the doctors aren't exactly the cream of the crop. I say that based on both personal experience and what friends have gone through. I don't think there is enough culture here to attract the best.

I have a friend who used to recruit doctors for a living, and he could never recruit for Asheville or any town around it because the best candidates were already flocking to the area because of all it offers.

I should explain better - he could have recruited for Asheville all day long, but didn't bother because no practice in Asheville needed to pay recruitment fees. They had all the wonderful candidates their hearts could desire.

I can see that - some of the country's best and brightest are practicing in and around the Asheville area. I think it has to do with not only the quality of the facilities but also the quality of life that people get when moving up to this area.

Exactly. Most doctors want the best quality of life they can get. The best ones have their choice of places.
