I started collecting the Rand McNally Street Guides for the places we visit most often. The only one I am missing is one for Asheville. And of course it's the one I want for our vacation this year. Rand McNally doesn't have it on their website anymore. In fact, they don't have most of them anymore. I checked Amazon and they say it's out of print.

Does anyone know where I can get a map book for the Asheville area? Doesn't have to be Rand McNally. I've looked on a few other map makers sites and have not had any luck. Sure Google Maps is great, but not of much help when you're on the road and have to change plans for whatever reason.

Magellan GPS is what you need and it's good everywhere. You can pick up a paper map of Asheville at any Staples or Office Max if that is what you truly want.

Or go to one of the large truck stops and pick up a "Motor Carrier's" map which is invaluable when traveling, but get the spiral bound version, it's worth it.

Strange. I MUCH prefer paper maps and atlases. There are 5 companies that have had Asheville map books in print within the last year:

1 Rand McNally
2 Universal Map
3 Superior Map/JSK
4 MiniTMap
5 Map Supply

1 - Can't find in stores or on website. RMcN are not slackers AT ALL when it comes to distributing their product or updating, so my guess is that they are about to release an updated edition, and the old editions sold out perhaps a little quicker than expected.

2 - Universal - Seems to be out of print and is off their website.

3 - Superior Map/JSK - Was purchased by Universal, so when/if Universal re-prints an Asheville map book, it may be an update of the Superior Map cartogrpahy, which was very detailed.

4 - miniTmap - No website. Found mine on a newsstand in Charlotte. Seems like they were doing 3-year updates, so they're a little overdue. Black and white, but very detailed, with a downtown enlargement. Catalog available from 865-688-3608, company based in Knoxville.

5 - Map Supply - Greensboro based company. Fold maps or atlases for the vast majority of VA, NC, SC, GA, much of TN, KY, AL, MS, LA. Likely one of the largest Southeastern map publishers. The graphic design and lay out is ho-hum, and they don't update as swiftly as they should, but their distribution rocks.

Check The Map Shop at Kings Dr and Morehead St in Charlotte. They are a great store, well stocked, and will carry multiple publishers for the sma ecity when available so customers can comparison shop.

Just buy an nc road map. Its a big book and has all of NC mapped. Including the big cities. I've found it useful more than once. Bought it from walmart years ago for less than 20 dollars. I still see them there though so.
