City-Data doesn't have anything on this town. I may want to take a look there, but anyone who can give me information before we leave for NC Aug 18 will be on my nice list!

I can only assume you mean the area of linville and it is not a city or town is why you are not finding it on city data.

That explains a lot, thanks. Someone suggested we look at Linville. I see from Google Maps that there are about 6 streets off Yellow Mountain Road and that's it. Thanks for the reply.

I had to look that one up. Other than this, I have nothing.

Linville was originally called Clay (1883). It later became Porcelain (1885) and was finally changed to Linville in 1888. It appears on the current official NC highway map.

Linville is a beautiful spot in Avery county. Elevation is probably 3600' to 3800' . It is fairly deserted in winter but very busy in summer with with residents from the flatlands.
It is the home to Linville golf and country club, Grandfather golf and country club and Linville Ridge golf and country club ,all ultra exclusive.
You should visit this area. It is very pretty country.

Right about the elevation. The North Carolina Gazetteer (1968) says 3,623 feet.

Dear Father,
Many years ago I spent a fall weekend in Linville Gorge. Lots of campsites and a view of the falls. Pretty rugged up there. Here is a website:
Linville Falls Village
From there, you can drive on up to the Boone and Blowing Rock NC area, where Applachian State is, skiing, lots of mountains. When you get to Boone, ask them how to get to the Valley Crucis Mast General Store, just a short drive away. Lovely area.

Wow, gigimac - great link! Thanks! We will definitely stop there next week!!

LiveLoveLaugh - thanks for the information! Watch for an old guy in a fedora sometime next week when we look at the area. It sounds WONDERFUL.

If it isn't too expensive, we would love to live in a place like that.

This thread is getting a bit confusing concerning the term Linville. This may help:

Linville - Township in Avery County

Linville Falls - Township in Burke County

Linville Gorge - Wilderness area in Burke County.

Linville Mountain - Avery County

Linville River - River in Avery and Burke Counties.

Linville Creek - Davie and Watauga Counties. (both use the same name)
