The way places get RUINED are when they come out on too many lists - the sheeples then flock there! So, I for one am glad some of my favorite little towns aren't on the list. As others have mentioned, those lists are meaningless anyway. Everyone has different criteria as to what makes a "best" for them individually, and it's usually different from those who make those lists!!!
I agree. What I value in a town is very different than most in society I have found.

What's really funny is when a town that you know fairly well makes the list, and it's some place you know you'd never want to live. Some towns look good on paper, but have an underlying vibe you don't want anything to do with.

Anyway, I know Brevard and Hendersonville have made many lists before, as has Asheville.

But still what about Duke University. Some of the best hc in U.S. I'm surprised Cary or some smaller town in that area didn't make the list. There seem to be so many great small towns in N.C.
The post mentions WESTERN NC--Duke is not in Western NC nor close enough to be feasible.

And Cary, population over 100K, is anything but a "small" town!

Most of these magazine "best towns/cities" seem to make little sense, anyway. I've about decided that places must pay for the "privilege" of being listed. Who wants hundreds of folks swarming into the area just because they read it in a magazine, without any further research, anyway?

Here's another silly list: I didn't check it though for WNC possibilities.
