Hello! We are considering a move to Asheville and know the area fairly well from the perspective of a couple without kids. Now we have young kids and are considering a move to the area due to a job opportunity. Is Asheville a great place to raise kids? We'd like good schools of course and a safe neighborhood to live in. Are there certain neighborhoods that are really nice for families with a good park or two that a kid could safely walk or ride a bike to? And last, is there a decent network of bike trails or lanes for competent riders? Any response to these questions would be greatly appreciated as we'll be visiting the area again soon. Thanks in advance for your feedback!
The city is adding bike lanes a fast as possible but outside of town you take your life in your hands riding a bike on many of the roads. These are basically old country roads with little room for bikes or pedestrians. There are some back roads that carry little traffic but in general I take my bike and head for the national forest to ride. Also if you find a community with limited access to the internal road network they are pretty safe--not necessarily a gated community. We live in one with only 2 entrances and a big loop around the lake that is very safe to ride bikes etc. Parks seem pretty safe--there is a sign at the entrances to every one reminding sex offenders that it is illegal for them to entree a park.
look for sheville mamas yahoo group. thoose folks will give you any info you need. its great for kids...plenty of safe places and if you are moving because you already have a job than you are ahead of 99% of folks moving here or living here already....thats the hardest part
