Im looking to purchase some acreage and build alternative housing such as cob or strawbale. Am really in love with the mountainous and valley areas. Black mountain, boone, asheville, and surrounding smaller hidden towns.
But the prices for land are outrageous compared tojust crossing the border into Tennessee whereive seen as low as a grand per acre,vs seeing up to100k for 1 acre in NC.
Anyone know any kind of tips or tricks to get a good price for someone whos been saving for years to move there and live a more simple life?

Tennessee side ? Really? No other options then i guess. Probably cheaper taxes on the whole too. Where did you have in mind? I know Johnson city and the tri city area, but thats about it.

Sorry for the delay - we've got heavy bands of rain from the tropical storm coming thru and I keep losing my connection
Black Mountain, Asheville, Weaverville, Mars Hill - they're all "hot" places. If you were willing to go closer to the NC/Virginia border toward Sparta you might find things a bit more affordable.
Basically cheap land and WNC don't exist. Land and taxes are much cheaper in TN, but honestly you kinda get what you pay for. Not trying to sound mean or disrespectful, but it's kind of one of those things that if you're gonna live in the mountains, you gotta be willing to pay for it. Otherwise, you're SOL.
Tips or tricks, stay away from any of the larger towns or cities. Asheville, Black Mountain, Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville are all madly expensive and the retirees from Florida have driven those real estate markets through the roof. A rule of thumb is the closer to the state lines you get, the cheaper land does get (but so does imo the sketchiness of the areas and the remoteness). Sparta and Allegheny County might be a viable option for you but I hear it's even gotten expensive as the prices have driven people out of Watauga, Ashe, and Avery Co.
Bottom line you're kinda trying to get blood out of a turnip, not totally impossible, but cheap land is honestly a thing of the past in WNC unless you're out in the middle of nowhere.
Tennessee has always been cheaper. Even remote areas of Madison County are going to be at least $7,000 an acre and with those, you typically get what you pay for.
Ideally, look in the Frog Pond and Jonesborough area of TN. You could be only an hour from Asheville and less to Johnson City, depending on where you are.

The OP may also want to research over the border in SW VA but will have to get (and evidently wants to be) further out in any County and away from city life. Northern GA (and possibly northeast GA, may be suitable.
The combination of "cheap" land prices and western NC does not exist if it is anywhere near buildable and conforms to zoning and other environmental laws.
land def is not cheap........but vacationland is never cheap and that what the whole area has become. just drive through the mountains near any of thoose towns you mentioned and you will find high end mountain communities everywhere. You will need to go way out in no where to find what you want in WNC perhaps out around robbinsville/murphy area but I doubt it.............also just fyi you are gonna have a real hard time getting any permits etc for alternative building. all strawbale need to be engineered......its really tough getting approval for that stuff if you are trying to do it legit.
It is better to LOOK at the mountains than to live on one...in my opinion.
We paid less than $3000/acre for 17 acres during the real estate boom.
You could buy the neighboring 10 acres for probably less than $25,000.
Nah, some of us just have to be on the top of one, looking out at others
