Wife and kids are coming down on the first and we are meeting in Asheville. Was wondering if there is anywhere different to shop for groceries and also looking for somewhere different to eat supper...got kids so keep that in mind! Not to expensive but doesn't have to be fast food either.

Any kid will love the village wayside in biltmore village. It was the old train station turned restaurant, you can still watch trains go by while eating. The food is burgers, sandwiches, and a few entree type dishes and everything there is excellent and the price can't be beat. You can then explore biltmore village which has several unique little local shops (on top of a few chains now). As for groceries, well theres the standard, fresh market, earthfare, and ingles.

you are looking for something different to shop and are talking about sams. but well, to me Sams is different lol ..

you got good advice with freshmarket, earthfare, greenlife and others. but nothing compared to Sams

we go to earth fare a lot. thursday night they have a special offer, where adults order a meal and up to five kids can have dinner for free. very yummy food and the price is not too beat.
Tupelo honey cafe has great kids meals and usually everyone likes there biscuit and blueberry jam, they are serving as a free appetizer.

I am assuming you wanted to write 'years' not months. My kids love to go to OB Tayler in biltmore park. other recommendations are the health adventure, coburn science museum and the asheville brewery company, where you can watch a movie (for a great price) and have good food served while you watch.

The only trains that pass by are Norfolk Southern freight trains. Freight trains operate on a schedule, but I have no idea how you would find it. Because of security concerns, freight train schedules have become much harder to come by. I do know when we have been there at least one has passed by (and that would have most likely been between 6 and 7 or so).

It is possible that a rail fan on this board may know the current schedule.

Since the building is an old train station, you get an "up close and personal" view of the passing trains.

There's usually a train every hour or so.

The Wayside is on Sweeten Creek Road (parking spaces are close to the road so I suggest backing in or you may find yourself in a jam trying to back into traffic). Wayside's burgers are great. A couple blocks down the road (left side leaving town), Moes bbq is a good bet. And down the road further still, on your left, is Amazing Savings. It's a grocery outlet... Not you're mom's grocery store. OR, if you want good cheap comfort food in a cassual envoro, check out J&S Cafeteria. One location in AVL and one out by the AVL Airport.

Salsa's is awesome. If you get one of the meals served in the bowl made of lava rock, ONE order will serve your entire clan. It's downtown near Patton/Biltmore Ave.

Mellow Mushroom might be fun for the kids (and you, too). Former gas station that also sold pickles. Now serves great pizza. Eat inside or out. Look for the old original pickle sign over the bar. Yep, the 'shroom would be a fun place. Very colorful.
