We have discussed and advised visitors, tourists, new hikers, to be very cautious around waterfalls in this area. Transylvania County covers a wide area of the Pisgah National Forest and is dubbed "land of the waterfalls" which are gorgeous, and serene to watch from a safe distance.

The article I've linked below should be read and taken seriously if you know anyone venturing out into the mountains to experience the beauty of the waterfalls all over western NC. We don't know if this couple were experienced hikers with knowledge of these mountains or not. I would say not. His companion had to walk several hours, a long distance, to a hydroelectric plant in the area to make a 911 call. Evidently she didn't have a cell phone on her, or maybe she didn't get a signal where they were. Nevertheless, the man lost his life after falling at a waterfall.

Rescuers have found the body of an Asheville man who fell from a Transylvania County waterfall. | BlueRidgeNow.com

Quilterchick thanks for posting information. We lose people here every year, visitors more often it seems but locals get careless too. I don't mean to sound flip all of us need to remember just how dangerous they can be it only takes one wrong step. Moss is very slippery and only a small amount of moisture can rehydrate it, not to mention damp leaves. As much as you might want to peer over the edge, don't stay back your life isn't worth the risk. Take binoculars for a closer look and always a cell reception is spotty but could save you. Don't go alone.

Was going to participate in the recovery but work was just too busy for me to take a day off. This was the 2nd major rescue op that Toxaway has done this year, both waterfall incidents. Where this was at is extremely rough. I always tell people who are visitors here to enjoy the waterfalls but please enjoy them from a distance. Why people feel the need to get near the top of a waterfall is beyond me.

I'm sorry for the lost, and regret what usually follows is barricades ruining chances shedding the natural views demanded from either lawyers or insurance companies.

It not just moss it rocks are also covered with slim.

When I go to Upper Creek Falls if I want to look down I get on my stomach and knees and look down that way. Life is more important than being a little dirty.

Thanks! Most firemen have a love/ hate relationship with these things. I love going in the woods and helping with a big search and/or rescue. But then when the actual recovery starts, it sucks.

The fact that you do it is wonderful. Not an easy task in many ways. We often take for granted those men and women who put themselves in danger to help us. Thank you.

I remember being on the Blue Ridge Parkway and looking from behind the rock wall and being laughed at by a tourist. He turned around and said, "Would you go over the wall and look if you would receive a million dollars?" I said, "No, because you cannot spend a million dollars if you are dead."

FYI We used to read in the newspaper about people who were bit by snakes on the trails. Do not sit on a seat or log unless you have checked underneath it and don't step where you cannot see your feet. North Carolina has beautiful mountains and we want visitors to see them safely.

The type of news on this thread makes us all sad.

Link is dead, however it sounds like a "Hold My Beer and Watch This" story.
