Hey everyone! I was completely surprised to see such an active forum on the Western North Carolina area. I was wondering however, if any of you had helpful suggestions of where a student should look around for part-time employment. I am a freshman attending classes here, and I really have no idea where to begin. I don't want to resort to the giant Walmart that seemingly "control's all" around here. So please, if anyone could, offer some suggestions. And if you live around here too, could you discuss some of the smaller, and more "quaint" stores, and you're opinions? Thank you very much!

Doesn't WCU have a job-placement service for students? I don't know about "quaint" (this area is changing so quickly, all the Appalachian character is gone) but Annie's bakery in Sylva is a good place to apply for work; also there are a few privately owned restaurants, coffee shops, etc. where you might find what you like. Also try Harrah's Cherokee Casino, they're always looking for help at their hotel and you don't have to be 21, as you do to work in the casino itself. During the "season" Memorial Day thru Labor Day and again in the month of October there are plenty of jobs in Highlands and Cashiers at the country clubs and golf courses. Just go to the "Franklin Press online" website in April for those jobs. Good Luck!!
