This is a huge, big deal!!! When the WEG were held at the KY Horse Park in 2010, it was the first time they were ever held outside of Europe. It was considered a huge coup for KY and the USA as a whole. To come back to the US, and to NC, so soon is another grand success! Congrats to the Tryon International Equestrian Center!!!
The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games sold and provided complimentary tickets to 419,853 visitors in September and October. Multiple equestrian events and numerous vendors
were available to them during their visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. All of these activities
contributed to the $201.5 million in total economic impact resulting from the Games.
Over 70 percent of the visitors to the Games were from outside Kentucky. They arrived from
63 countries and all 50 states. The world-wide recession reduced their numbers from the
initial expectation that over 85 percent of the visitors would be from outside Kentucky. Many
more international visitors were expected than were able to attend.
With the Tryon facility being so new, I'd imagine that there will be a significant curiosity factor within the worlwide equine community. It will attract a LOT of interest.
I am very excited about WEG coming here. They purchased an adjacent golf course and are using it to improve the cross country course, which is somewhat lacking. A lot of riders are skeptical right now, we were sort of shocked and disappointed with the XC course this past summer that was used for the AECs and the pony club championships. It's a lot to get done in a short amount of time, but I think they can do it.
A lot of people are questioning the capability of the area to support the lodging, parking, food, etc. needed. But they do seem to have huge plans. I'm optimistic.

Lexington had a few hiccups, hopefully Tryon will learn from that.
I imagine lodging will be spread out from Asheville to Greenville/Spartanburg to Charlotte and beyond. Visitor logistics undoubtedly will be a challenge.
