Entertaining the thoughts of leaving 4' of snow behind(curently live in VT) and moving to NC near the mtns. Do any towns have a spirit of community without over development and culture available. Both my wife and I are artists, we love the "little bubble" we live but I'm over the harsh winters. We are into alternitive medicine, eat organic, shop local, and hate WALMART! Can't live in a cookie cutter town w/ McMansions. Any thoughts on towns to consider or is just a pipe dream? Any thoughts appreciated

Black Mountain comes to mind - I would definitely check that out, sounds just perfect for you guys
Check out Marshall - lots of artists and an active Arts Council - plus Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre (SART) (in Mars Hill 15 minutes away) - The old high school has been renovated into artists studios, recording studios, yoga and pilates classes. Marshall High Studios: THE PROJECT. People like their privacy, but I have found friendship and community there. Closest Wal-Mart will be in Weaverville but it's far enough away and the Ingles in really nice and new.

I would suggest Asheville for a small city (Very artsy fartsy).
Hendersonville for a smaller town (about 45 min - 1hr south of Asheville).
BOTH are beautiful!
GOOD LUCK!
