I lived there about 3 and a half years ago. Loved every second of it but sadly due to my lack of job skills I had to move back home with mom and dad in Philadelphia. Once in Philadelphia I went to get an RN degree so I could move back but it seems like Western NC is taking a beating. Between the drought and over development I'm getting a little worried that it wont be the area I fell in love with when I left it. I'm talking the real rural stuff Like Avery and Watauga and Burke. A place a man can get a little land for a reasonable price and not be able to see any of his neighborers ya know? Will I still be able to find this in Western NC? Whats the word on the drought and is the mass Floridian migration easing at all?

The word on the drought is dire although there is good news in Caldwell County as they have discovered some aquifers.
The "mass Floridian migration" has pretty much come to a screeching halt only because they cannot unload their Florida properties. It seems to me that if you are in the health care business Floridians moving here would work in your favor. Most of them are older and older people need more health care facilities.

See its not the Floridian them self its the stuff that follows them, the chain stores and developers. I'm trying to escape that kind of stuff not move back into it.I guess if the drought doesn't let up I guess ill have to try out Virgina. -sigh-

In your profession you can work any where you want to. You might want to look at middle TN. I own a piece of property exactly as you describe except I don't know your definition of reasonable. Prices are very attractive here compared to WNC.

It's not all flat there, as there are some small plateaus of sorts, but it's definitely not mountains per se.

After you pass the Cumberland Plateau (or Cookeville) going west it gets pretty flat but before that it is very much like WNC. TN does claim part of the Great Smokey Mtns. you know.
