Is there any requirement for a temporary resident of NC (less than 6 months) in terms of car registrations? If I stayed in NC for the winter months, for example, 3-4 months, would I need to do anything regarding my car registration while in NC? Just wondered in case I got stopped for something and had to present the driver's license and reg, which would be from my home state (ME). Not sure if I'll use this scenario, but wondered if there were requirements.

Not a lawyer or an NC DMV official, but from reading the NC DMV link and being an NC rez for 14 yrs, my opin is no.

The Net is your friend:
North Carolina Car Registration Guide - Renewals, Online & Mail Options, Forms, & Fees | DMV.org

Half or more of our friends are FL rez/some other state than NC, and drive their FL plated cars around NC every year, often for 6 months or more.

In a nut shell, NC requires one to register a car in NC "within 30 days of becoming a resident".

You are not a rez, and if/until you do the NC rez deal, it does not matter.

Cops stop out of state cars everyday. Other than whatever tix you might be getting, no code I could find will affect you or your out of state car, other than the car's home state reg and insurance being up to date.

Thanks for the good info! I spent a fair amount of time on the NC DMV site looking up info on those car taxes last month, and I thought I saw something about being a temporary resident and having to register that with the DMV. I must have been off the mark on that one and am glad to hear from a long time resident that it is not the case. Thanks again!
