South Market Village is a retail center planned for the southwest corner at Greenville Highway and White Street that will include a 49,000 square feet Publix supermarket. The projected site is currently occupied by Atha Plaza and additional parcels along Market Street, White Street, and Greenville Highway.

South Market Village (2007):

South Market Village was the name of another development planned south on Greenville Highway across from the former Food Lion #287 (800 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792-5725). The ten acre development would have included an 80 room Marriott with a conference center, Copper River Grill, Dunkin Donuts and HomeTrust Bank.

This site remains vacant.

I just can't envision that without a lot of infrastructure changes happening in that area. I wonder why they didn't build into an area that already has more infrastructure set up (Spartanburg Highway or Upward Road) The only thing I can think of is that they're trying to capture the Flat Rock affluence.

Oh well, I'll just avoid the area until they are finished.

I have not noticed anything official lately from the city of Hendersonville in regards to the progress of South Market Village.

Several tenants from and adjacent to Atha Plaza have relocated or are relocating. El Paso Mexican Restaurant #1, located at 619 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792-5757, is relocating to the former Quincy's at 807 Spartanburg Highway, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792-5769. Whitley Drugs, previously located at 605 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792-5757, has relocated to 814 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792-5725.

The exodus of tenants from Atha Plaza should be an indication Publix is indeed coming.

Image: Publix proposed for South Market Village

The Hendersonville Planning Board will hear plans for the proposed 49,000 square feet Publix and South Market Village at its meeting on Monday, 14 December 2015 at 1600 hours.

The rendering of the store may indicate a 49,098 square feet Publix with a pharmacy drive thru.

South Market Village received unanimous approval from the Hendersonville Planning Board.

Groundbreaking for the 49,098 square feet Publix is projected in mid-2016. The store would open in 2017.

Wonder how they will handle the traffic, because this will increase traffic at a point where it is already a problem. IMO, the Publix is for all the FL residents that Summer in WNC.

The right turn lane on White Street onto Greenville Highway is being extended. A northbound left turn lane and southbound right turn lane from Greenville Highway are being added. Most truck traffic will enter from Greenville Highway and exit onto White Street.

Do you have a sketch of that plan ? Cannot imagine why Publix chose that intersection; only to be 'near' the other stores. It's mind boggling traffic there on a good day.

But heck, they didn't ask me.
