I had the same thing happen to me in the Canton / Newfound area early last June. The kids hit at least 4 homes. They ran through yards at night and check for unlocked car doors in driveways. They got an XM radio (since disabled through XM) and a digital camera. I still am puzzled at how my car was unlocked at the time, as I lock it, and it can lock itself, when I get out of it... ? ??
I have a very effective, bright, motion light installed now... and my two loud dogs are right there by the door, not in another room, as they once were. The bright lights and the dogs startled, and scared the daylights out of a couple of kids "just cutting through" my yard at 11:30PM over the weekend. I let them know that they didn't need to be cutting through the yard and told him why. If he happened to be of the mindset to try the car boosting tricks, I think he will choose another place to do it. If he wasn't a booster type, well - I don't think he'll be cutting through my yard again, for sure.
Keep the car doors locked, and make your home a home that isn't easy to do sneaky things around... i.e., well lit.... and just having dogs is a fantastic deterrent! I even have a padlock on my oil fill cap for my furnace fuel!
I used to live in Hendersonville, and trust me the crime is not too terrible there. You get crime everywhere you go. I have lived in Houston, TX now for 10 years and believe me, we have crime. If you do the studies and compare, Hendersonville is no worse than a major city like Houston.
