Having a difficult time understanding how a city where one can purchase a nice two bedroom condo/townhome in the 100K-150K price bracket with low taxes is considered "impossible to afford", unless one has no grasp of the reality in 90% of the country.

Where are the nice 2 BR condo/townhomes in that price bracket in Asheville ? Where are they in Hendersonville ? You do realize that it is not only retired couples who live in this area. There are more families with 2 or 3 children, or even one, where it is not possible for them to choose a condo or townhome. Many of those type homes are restricted to 55+ if you can find one for those prices.

The average is more like $180K and up with HOA fees on top of taxes and insurance. Young couples with children in the majority of instances do not have a down payment, and cannot afford or qualify for a large mortgage or any mortgage. HOA's also have strict rules; do you think they will let children ride their bikes on the private roads? build 'forts' in the backyard, play ball in the backyard, have other children their ages nearby (IF there is a backyard)? There are also school districts to be considered and whether or not the bus picks up children down the road, or at the entrance.

You're dreaming Kyle.

I have to agree with QC. A nice townhome is probably closer to $200k. And with the WNC wages, it can be tough.
