We are visiting Asheville next month for 3 nights. My sister has a bad knee and cannot walk long distances. What locations (overlooks, parks, etc.) do you suggest we might find a bench to sit and enjoy the October foliage? Hope to take lots of pics for jealous friends back home in Florida. Hiking trails are out until knee surgery.

Thanks!
Dee

If you get on the blue ridge parkway from Asheville and go either south or north, you really can't go wrong. To the North is the craggy gardens overlook, which is pretty spectacular. I'd just get on the parkway and drive until you see something that catches your eye.

If you go South all the way to Graveyard Fields, there are many beautiful places to stop and enjoy the views.

If you have a car and care for an excellent drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a couple of stops offer very good views with minimal walking:

'High Point' on the BR Pkway at Richland Balsam, ~ 6100 ft elevation:
Richland Balsam, Blue Ridge Parkway

Water Rock Knob
Waterrock Knob, MP 451.2 - Blue Ridge Parkway

Waterrock Knob on Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

A casual drive on the BR Parkway is a wonderful half day to see the mountains of Western NC, the Autumn foliage, etc.

Easy to access from 'Asheville area', and head SW with increasing mile marker posts.

Weekends are packed, so I rec'd a weekday, and peak color is earlier/much earlier at high elevations.

Throw a couple of cheap azz folding chairs in the trunk, (Target/WalmartNation, et al), for your sister/you to sit on...

Nailing the date(s) is a crap shoot, but generally mid Oct is peak time, in my experience, esp at higher elevations.

If you can get a room at the Pisgah Inn the view is right there. At least stop at the restaurant if the inn is full.

Definitely the Pisgah Inn, but the restaurant will be crowded, so expect a lengthy wait, maybe up to an hour. There's a great overlook there with a few chairs to enjoy the view. Very unlikely you can get a room there at this time.

OPs might want to plan their meal between usual meal times.
