A dear friend is considering moving to Asheville to get better VA services for her husband.
They have faced his struggles with PTSD for years. He's just been diagnosed with dementia. Perhaps the dementia will erase some of the horrible memories, but it still leaves her caring for him with little support until it is time for a memory care unit.
If anyone has had experience with the care at the Charles George VA Medical Center, would you please DM about what services they offer for someone in his situation.
Is it too late to answer this for you? My husband and I moved here this summer. We are both veterans and healthy. My first experience with the VA in Asheville as a patient, will be this month. Though I haven't had personal experience yet I do know that this VA hospital has been rated #1 in the country by the patients for satisfaction. There is a lot of bad news always about the VA on the media. I work for the VA in a different facility and I can tell you that the people I meet here, who are involved with the VA, take their responsibilities towards the veterans seriously.
My family use this facility and can't say enough good about the care they receive: cancer and heart treatment.
I do not know about PTSD etc since none of my family have used that aspect of the VA.
My sister is a psychiatric nurse practitioner mental health counselor at the VA in another city and she is loaded down with patients and overwhelmed with paperwork requirements from above. As one more thing goes wrong at the VA they propagate a new form that must be filled out for each patient.
So if it were me, I would seek personal professional PTSD help not from the VA. Medical help different story. and I would not move somewhere for that reason.
