You better believe it. It's happening all over this state.

BI-LO has ran its course in Buncombe County. Its exit should be near.

The city of Asheville has nearly half the population of Buncombe County.

I don't believe it either. And it certainly hasn't been happening. From 2010 to 2015, Asheville added about 6,000 residents total...thats a little over 1,000 per year (which is about 3 people per day...a long way from 45).

Publix already acquired and converted several BI-LO stores in Charlotte and Rock Hill, SC. While BI-LO may be declining, Food Lion seems to be hanging in there. And Ahold-Delhaize knows how to operate successful supermarkets. It's just a matter of them determining the proper format. Perhaps adapt from Giant-Landover where possible, but a smaller version.

If Ahold Delhaize knows how to operate successful supermarkets, it would be intervening with Food Lion. Food Lion has eroded where closing stores may be easier than updating them.

BI-LO continues its decline. One store in South Carolina has been announced to close. More stores are projected to close.

Ahold operated BI-LO successfully for years. They continue to operate Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle very successfully. And Delhaize previously operated Food Lion decently during better times. So they should be able to combine forces and come up with a better strategic plan for Food Lion. Otherwise time to pull the plug and close up shop and sell for the real estate. And sadly, BI-LO and Winn-Dixie have seen their better days and the end may be near, sooner rather than later. They are shrinking in SC and have almost completely withdrawn from NC.

If Food Lion would shut down at least part of the stores that are doing poorly they could lower prices.

Lidl has a 6 year plan. They plan to open 100 stores per year for 6 years. Before the 6 years is up, I would expect to see a lot less Food Lions. I think that the Lidls will attract people who have looked askance at Aldi. Those people will then check out Aldi. That is going to add up to more losses for Food Lion. Good Lord, Lidl will be making fresh bread. Aldi is now selling Amoroso rolls, which are selling like crazy around here. You'd think that they were giving the Amoroso rolls away. That's just one area where Food Lion isn't competing now, much less when the Lidls open.

Ooh, Amoroso rolls at Aldi! I haven't noticed them here yet but I will check I thought you could only get those up north. We always bring them back with us after visiting family

I would guess that the Bi-Lo at Hudson & Union in Gastonia will close within the year. It's going to find itself in the middle, between Aldi & Lidl. There will come a point when it will be time to shut the few Bi Lo stores left in the Charlotte area. The Bi-Los in the mountains will then be all that's left in NC. If Lidl does not open this summer in Asheville, they will probably open next year. It's just a matter of time.
