Access onto United States Route 74 west from Pea Ridge Road should be detoured to Union Road this week. Bridges are being constructed along United States Route 74 for a new road to pass under connecting Pea Ridge Road to John Shehan Road for the Tryon International Equestrian Center.

United States Route 74 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through August for the bridge construction.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has proposed improvements to N.C. 108 between Columbus and Tryon with two separate projects.

The first project is the second part of the I-26/U.S. 74/N.C. 108 interchange modification project (I-4729B) in Columbus. Proposed improvements include:
  • Replacing the existing bridge over I-26 with a four-lane bridge on new location
  • Constructing two-lane roundabouts on each end of the new bridge
  • Extending the on-ramp from N.C. 108 to I-26 East
  • Adding a center turn lane between St. Luke's Hospital and Shuford Rd.
  • Adding sidewalks, curb and gutter from the hospital to Walker St.

With the exception of the bridge, N.C. 108 in Columbus will not be widened to four lanes as recommended in the I-4729 Feasibility Study completed in 2006. Additionally, U.S. 74 eastbound will be permanently reduced to one lane to accommodate the new on-ramp from I-26 westbound currently being constructed as part of project I-4729A.

A public meeting regarding the project will be held Tuesday, May 22nd from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Isothermal Community College auditorium in Columbus. Comments can be submitted until June 22nd.

Right-of-way acquisition is scheduled for next year (2019), with construction slated for 2021-2022. The current estimates for right-of-way and construction are $1.0 million and $6.8 million, respectively.

The second project (R-5838) proposes improvements to N.C. 108 between Columbus and Tryon. Proposed improvements include:
  • Adding left turn lanes at some intersections
  • Adding four-foot paved shoulders to accommodate bicyclists
  • Replacing three bridges
  • Partially constructing on new location in a few areas to straighten the roadway and accommodate the construction of new bridges

The project has been scaled back from what was initially proposed in the State Transportation Improvement Program. The project initially called for a four-lane widening between Columbus and Tryon, but was met with a negative response. Following a public meeting held last month, public opposition to the project has still been strong due to the impacts to several residences and businesses.

Right-of-way acquisition is scheduled for 2020, with construction starting in 2021. The current estimates for right-of-way and construction are $3.1 million and $16.3 million, respectively.

There is not enough traffic to support widening North Carolina Highway 108 between Columbus and Tryon.

The informational meeting is something I would like to attend.

So it's been in the news a few folks are finally seeing the royal screwing.
Nearly $30,000,000.00 of tax money spent on a billionaires pet project plus the water and sewer lines being paid for by tax dollars. I figure when ya openly buy the right people anything goes.

I took the United States Route 74 exit 161 flyover today. It is a great ride. The split to Interstate 26 eastbound should open soon.

It looks like they really blew the budget trying to finish before the World Equestrian Games. I don't know why they bothered rushing this project, since visitors traveling from South Carolina that would be using the new ramps are exiting in South Carolina to get to the parking area. Based on photos and video, it looks like the stands are barely a quarter-full at any given event anyway. Oh well, just extra tax dollars wasted.

Have you read or heard of plans of improving United States Route 176 between Tryon and Saluda?

I'm not aware of any, and don't expect there to be any any time soon. The only possible improvement would be the replacement of the functionally obsolete twin bridges (narrow, close to 90 years old and have posted weights), but I don't think they're on the replacement list since they're not structurally deficient. It's a very lightly traveled road, averaging less than 1,000 vehicles per day. For comparison, 108 between Tryon and Columbus averages 7,000-13,000 vehicles per day. I-26 averages 38,000 between Columbus and Saluda.
