I posted about this a year ago and was told to look on the coast.....it's a year later, there are BEAUTIFUL mountain lakes....I would LOVE to windsurf on a lake...I've windsurfed in my 20's....I bought a farm....my friends thought I was NUTS....would I be NUTS to buy a windsurf board!!???? Does anyone windsurf during the hot summer months on any of our beautiful lakes????
my husband has been a windsurfer [ now kitesurfer] for 20 years+,
he has never windsurfed on the mountain lakes. he windsurfed Lake Norman [ Charlotte] for many
years and mostly chose to drive to the coast for some good uninterupted
wind. no boaters, no blocking of the wind from shoreline trees and mountains. there are still many who windsurf/kitesurf on Lake Norman but it is more to get a fix until they make it to the shore.
we have windsurfings friends that once they moved to Asheville
packed it in. sold their gear.
bottom line is that it's your life and if you want to you should try it.
what a beautiful setting it would be.
if you look at my name you will have a clue as to where we have ended up
living!
Thanks Moved to the Coast! I'm not looking for waves....just some light wind and a windsurf....hopefully I will find someone to go w/ me....lol...at least carry the board!!!!
There are some lakes but access isn't always good and the wind might not always be in your favor. Lake Julian might be an option, it's where the power plant is. Watch out for people fishing, canoes, kayaks plus the crew boats. It can get windy here and I'd not want to hang out in that water for too long, it's sorta...green.
hi LiveLaughLove - It's now 8 years later (!!!). Anyway, I'm an asheville area resident who windsurfs. Often travel to lakes of upstate SC, but hit local ones occasionally too. message me if you have questions or interests, and are still alive and curious about windsurfing
I tried it several times at the beach but never got really good....
but I did enjoy it....
