Did anyone see anything on the news at all about the drive-by shooting in the Vermont Ave. neighborhood, a normally quiet, middle-class neighborhood? I heard about this event through word of mouth, but saw absolutely nothing on the news outlets, neither WLOS nor the ACT.
I can't help but wonder if Asheville's crime is intentionally suppressed to keep up appearances of Asheville as a safe, quiet, tourist-friendly destination. Big-time hotelier money is at stake, after all.
There was a break-in and stabbing in this general area last year that was equally kept on the down-low.

Reason: fixed typo
Wonder no more: of course the gatekeepers suppress as much negative information as they can.
No place is 'safe' unless we take steps to morph our criminal justice economy from a revenue generating scheme, into something that actually improves public safety. Right now, criminal justice in most places is all about expanding their own institutions - that's the #1 goal - keep those jails and prisons full, keep the court docket full, keep everyones cousins and brother in-laws employed, then recycle the overflow into the community... through various second chance programs, court diversions, etc. Every one of the violent criminals started somewhere, I'd bet that shooting and stabbing you mentioned weren't the perps first violent crimes. But this is all by design, because, well, it's not about public safety, it's about revenue, maintenance and expansion of all the systems that create our criminal justice economy.
Every violent criminals 2nd (or 3rd or 4th... etc) chance comes at their next victims expense. So yes, I believe they suppress negative publicity of any sort as a means to their ends of expanding their institutions.

Some people just don't care about their communities.
