I agonized over this issue for a couple of years and ended up buying at the west end of Lake James in McDowell County. I was looking for land rather than a house and I just couldn't stomach the land prices in Buncombe County, particularly when you stir generally bad topography into the equation. I'm not too far from I-40 and I can be in downtown Asheville in less than 45 minutes if I want to go there. Marion has decent restaurants, shopping and health care and real estate is much lower priced than it is further west or north. Nice people, too.
If you're a greenhorn you might just want to skip the NC mountains. You won't understand us and these mountains will humble you. But, if you ever visit we'd love to take you snipe huntin'.
Actually, the word is spelled "putz"
Seems to me that you'd find a job or job prospect first before you uproot and move your family to an unfamiliar place that you may or may not like. Job market in Asheville very tight and very little snowfall. Good luck.
iI HAD NO INTENTION OF MOVING THERE WITHOUT A JOB AND THANKS FOR BEING JUDGEMENTAL IN THINKING THAT I WOULD. I LIVE AT THE BEACH IN EASTERN NC NOW AND HAVE BEEN OUT THERE SEVERAL TIMES. ASHEVILLE LITTLE SNOW? DEFINE LITTLE. MY FEILD THE JOBS ARE WIDE OPEN EVERYWHERE
If We See Snow 3 Times A Year We Would Be Happy, We Get None Now
