Quite often crime follows poverty.
I previously posted that Mt. Airy is NOT located in Western NC. It seems that Poppydog wanted to disagree before he finally agreed. Regarding the high crime rate, it is likely due to Andy and Barney both being deceased.

Per Poppydog:

"You might also post on the Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point forum since Mt Airy is close to that area."

To be honest, I don't think there is agreement by anyone that Mt Airy is in either the WNC area or the Winston/Greensboro area.

It is actually a twix and tweener. Part way from each and therefore can be shared by each.

I completely agree with linking Andy and Barney's demise to the resultant spike in crime in Mt Airy.

If the OP likes the job opportunity, it doesn't mean he has to live in Mt. Airy. They could look for housing just a bit north of Winston-Salem, and drive up 52 to work. It's not that far away. Or live in some other community and drive to work from there. That would not be far from Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock parks, or even a day trip to the mountains.

I do think that Mt Airy is the start of the mountains so it makes sense to post both here and the Greensboro forum. Mt Airy is about the same distance from West Jeff as it is from G-boro. I think it is the dividing point between the piedmont and the mountains. https://www.ncpedia.org/our-state-ge...-snap-mountain

Surry County was part of the original Piedmont Triad MSA. The region was split in 2003, with Forsyth and Guilford (and other counties) moved into separate smaller regions. The old region is still considered a Census Statistical Area. For all practical purposes, Surry County (inc. Mt. Airy) is in the Piedmont Triad.

BTW, the OP started a new thread in the Triad sub-forum.

P.S. I worked for the NC Dept of Commerce in the 1980's and was the regional Triad rep. Surry was one of my counties.
